Digital Experience Designer
Driving a Light Vehicle
An interactive learning experience.
The Client Brief
Ensure all staff are trained to drive company-specific Light Vehicles (LV's)
Learner completion certificates should be reflected in staff files within weeks of completing the general staff induction.
Threats
-
Complacency toward learning
-
Overestimation of the previous experience
-
Past experience with boring eLearning
Opportunities
An employment requirement ensures that all new hires are already capable and experienced drivers.
The Actual Problem
The frequency of near misses and breakdowns of LVs had was having a big impact on recurring expenditure and would soon become a safety issue.
Over the years a culture of ticking off boxes on lengthy training manuals had created a situation where most staff had no actual training before being allowed to drive LVs.

Research, Design and Development
Learner Goals
-
Gain demonstratable competence on the functionality, care and use of LV's
-
Adhere to site-specific speed limits
-
Become an advocate for following procedures
My Role
I was the Instructional Designer and e-Learning Developer. In this role, I developed a needs analysis, curriculum, learner journey, storyboards, designed mock-ups, authored the learning module using Articulate Storyline and published in the LMS.
What I enjoyed most in this project were designing learner journeys, storyboarding, development and building custom interactions.
“I'm so pumped by the level of training this job affords but I've been driving for 8 years.
Why should I be wasting time re-learning what I already know? After all, an LV is just another car”.

-
If LVs were properly used and maintained, the quarterly maintenance cost would reduce
QUICK WINS (Mindset transformation)
-
Create an internal campaign with posters, screensavers and intranet banners
-
Offer incentives and staff awards for sites with best LV maintenance records
BIG WINS (Develop engaging interactive training packages)
-
Design and develop short learning packages utilising interactivity and gamification.
Outcomes
Quick Wins
-
There was an increased awareness resulting in open conversations about culture.
-
Engagement on the learning platform by staff went up by 62% weekly for 2 quarters.
Big Wins
-
The training package had completion rates averaging 87.2% per quarter
-
LV's had 59% fewer breakdowns and maintenance cost dropped by up to 22%.
The module was later broken down into 5-minute chunks resulting in higher completion rates.
